The Purple House Choir operates under the Class and Therapy programme of Purple House Cancer Support.
Their singing class meets twice a month at Purple House and anyone can join, young and old! The class is facilitated by Veronica O’Leary with Musical Director Joan Dempsey. Guitarist Martin Dodd accompanies, and there is a small team of admin support.
Classes begin with 10-15 minutes of light vocal warm-up before singing through a repertoire of music. They have several familiar songs, and every week Joan introduces new songs, too.
The purpose of the group is to enjoy singing – no experience is necessary. It is a form of expression and acts as a positive coping mechanism.
The release of tension through music and singing will open people’s minds to support. There is a profound sense of camaraderie in the group and it’s a great feeling to be around like-minded people.
The Purple House Choir’s aim is to give people something to sing about and to reduce stress levels that build up for family, friends, and those living with illness or those bereaved by illness.
